Jamii Media Instance

Jamii Media is monitoring misinformation, disinformation, online gender-based violence, and hate speech across traditional and online media in Tanzania using Determ and Sikiliza. The project produces quarterly reports with insights, trends, and recommendations to strengthen journalism and promote safer public discourse.

Context: Sikiliza should monitor radio, TV, and print content in Tanzania to identify and capture cases of misinformation and disinformation, online gender-based violence (OGBV), and hate speech. Monitoring should focus on statements, discussions, interviews, talk shows, news reports, opinion pieces, and adverts that include false or misleading claims, offensive or derogatory language directed at women and girls, or language that incites hatred, discrimination, or violence based on ethnicity, religion, region, or gender. Special attention should be given to coded or colloquial Swahili expressions, slang, and cultural phrases often used in traditional media when spreading misinformation, fueling gender-based abuse, or promoting hate speech. The goal is to capture all explicit and implicit mentions, whether serious, sarcastic, or framed as humour, that could influence public opinion or fuel societal divisions.
